A key part for Artec's fundamental methodology (and therefore success) as auditorium designers is the creation of a Basic Design for the principal auditoria as a part of the pre-design phase of the project. This Basic Design is a set of pre-architectural conceptual design drawings of the principal auditoria defines all the key characteristics of the auditorium that impact the acoustics in particular, as well as audience comfort, sightlines, circulation and the accommodation of specialized performance systems. The Basic Design forms the starting point for the iterative design process with the architect of the project and, if the process calls for a competitive process to select an architect, it is typically included in the architectural competition brief.
