Chan Shun Concert Hall is within the Chan Centre
for the Performing Arts, situated at the western tip of Vancouver's
Point Grey Peninsula, on the University
of British Columbia (UBC) campus. The Centre, which opened in
1997, also features Telus
Theatre for drama and dance, and the Royal Bank Cinema, a film
screening/lecture room.
The Chan Shun Concert Hall has 1400 seats, 200
of which are behind the platform for use with a chorus. Used primarily
for teaching and rehearsing, the Hall serves mainly to enhance the
University's arts education programs. Its highly-regarded acoustics,
however, also make it a chosen venue for UBC recordings, local and
regional groups, touring chamber music groups and recitalists. The
layout also makes it conducive to semi-staged concert opera productions
by the UBC music department.
The Hall was designed to support both regular
student use and the exacting demands of touring professionals. An
adjustable canopy above the platform, along with the room's geometry,
allows the music director and musicians to tailor their acoustical
environment for each event. Motorized acoustical banners can be
extended to reduce the reverberance for amplified events, and other
musical offerings where a "dry" acoustic is preferred.
An orchestra pit can be used for performances such as concert opera.
A modest, but high quality, sound reinforcement system is provided,
with extensive provisions for touring groups.
Artec provided Design and Planning services covering

Centre was Bing
