Telus Studio Theatre is within the Chan Centre
for the Performing Arts, situated at the western tip of Vancouver's
Point Grey Peninsula, on the University
of British Columbia (UBC) campus. The Centre, which opened in
1997, also features the Chan
Shun Concert Hall and the Royal Bank Cinema, a film screening/lecture
room.
The Telus is a flexible theater with ability
to seat between 160 and 275 people, in various configurations. Designed
as an experimental, empty "black box," Telus Studio Theatre
accommodates several stage arrangements that can be adjusted to
meet specific production needs. The arrangements fall into two primary
set ups - end stage and thrust stage - yet each features several
variation options. A theatre trap system allows stage access within
any and all configurations. Seating is arranged on three levels
of 12 towers, which are most often placed in a horseshoe shape.
Telus Studio Theatre is equipped with a catwalk system for lighting
and rigging access. The venue's shared dressing rooms can support
up to 32 people.
Due to its unique features, the innovative space
is an attractive venue for avant-garde and classical drama productions,
as well as small music ensembles looking for an intimate space.
