Derngate Centre opened on April 4, 1983.
For this innovative 1450-seat multi-form hall,
Artec Consultants developed a basic auditorium concept where the
shape of the space can range from a traditional proscenium theater
to one that closely resembles an in-the-round arena. This transformation
is achieved by various arrangements of seating towers. Artec also
designed an acoustic ceiling that can be lowered to align with the
auditorium ceiling for symphony concerts. In symphonic or choral
concert settings, the towers are rearranged to accommodate patrons.
The arena setting is ideal for darts championships, boxing, or fashion
shows. A flat floor format can be obtained by dropping seating underneath,
and then raising the hydraulic floor back again, thus providing
an ideal setting for banquets, dinner dances, or large exhibitions.
The Derngate Centre has played host to a variety
of events, including regular performances of British and European
orchestras, popular music and variety shows, beauty contests, several
children's shows, and trade exhibitions.
Artec provided Design and Planning services covering
Auditorium

for the Derngate Centre were Renton
Howard Wood Levin of London, UK.
