The Allen Room, Frederick P. Rose Hall, New York, New York, USA

A stunning glass-walled performance space, The Allen Room, is located within Jazz at Lincoln Center's new home, Frederick P. Rose Hall. The jazz performance venue, which opened in 2004, is part of a large Time-Warner Center complex, at New York City's Columbus Circle. Facilities within also include the 1200 seat Rose Theater; the more intimate, informal Dizzy's Club; Ertegun Hall of Fame; fully equipped recording studios; classrooms; and offices.

The 600-seat Allen Room is a variable-use space, which takes advantage of the expansive view of Central Park below, with the placement of one high glass wall situated behind the performers. In the evening, car lights reflecting off the glass from the street below are coupled with sounds of jazz to provide a unique portrait of New York City's nightlife.

Loose seats are positioned on steep angle risers, providing sightlines that convey a warm and intimate atmosphere during ensemble performances. Every other riser row is equipped with a lift that allows the rows to be raised or lowered to alter riser/seating configuration. This unique system allows the seating layout of the room to be adjusted for larger dancing and dining areas.

Artec’s package of design and planning services included Auditorium Design services for Rose Theater, which was further developed in collaboration with JALC and Rafael Viñoly Architects. Other services included Facility Planning and the design and planning of Specialized Performance Equipment Systems for all spaces, as well as Noise & Vibration Control. Artec services were provided in joint venture with Walter Storyk Design Group under the name “Sound of Jazz.”
