Sang Nam Hall, LG Arts Center, Seoul, Korea

LG Arts Center, which is located within the 40-story corporate headquarters for LG Mart, one of the LG Group companies, contains the magnificent SangNam Hall. The LG Arts Center opened in March of 2000.

The 1050-seat concert theatre can accommodate a variety of events, from symphonic and jazz concerts, to opera, dance, and musical theater performances works, to corporate presentations. The auditorium's acoustic control system features carefully designed reverberation control systems, including acoustic banners, concert towers, and ceiling. Through various combinations of adjustability, these tools create the best acoustic environment for any event. Sound-reflecting concert towers can be rolled onto stage or stored to make room for onstage scenery, while folding concert canopy units can be flown up into the fly tower. The seating is located on the main floor and on two balconies at the back of the room with no boxes located along sidewalls.

A layer of isolation-bearing pads, inserted under the basement and on one side of the building, separates the LG Arts Center building from any outside noise and vibration. This type of new building isolation system had been used for the first time in Korean theater construction.

Artec provided Design and Planning services covering Pre-Design Phase services, Auditorium Design, Facility Planning, Specialized Performance Equipment Systems Design and Noise & Vibration Control consulting for the Center. Architect for this project was Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (Chicago) and Chang-Jo Architects (Seoul).
