The Lionel Hampton Center, is an international center for the study and performance of
Jazz. The Center serves to unite the University
of Idaho's Lionel Hampton Jazz
Festival, Lionel Hampton School
of Music, and the
International Jazz Collections in a state-of-the-art education
and performance facility. The project was completed
in 2007.
The Music Room has been specially designed for
the performance needs of jazz musicians and audiences, but also
with the ability to accommodate a wide variety of regional arts
community and touring performances. With an adjustable moving wall,
for example, the hall will have the ability to seat as many as 800
people or as few as 250. The Music Room will also feature high-quality
recording and broadcasting equipment.
The complex also includes rehearsal spaces,
teaching studios, a library and archival space, classroom, practice
rooms, and offices for faculty and administration. Archival space
in the Center houses an interactive music library and the International
Jazz Collection of instruments, recordings, clothing, letters, diaries
and other items that belonged to famous jazz artists.
