The concert theatre at Austin
Peay State University is located in the Music and Communication
Building. Home for music and mass communications teaching programs
at the University, the building was completed in 1990. The facility
includes the concert theatre, vocal and instrumental rehearsal rooms,
teaching studios, and practice rooms. In addition, there are accommodations
for the communications department and WAPX, Austin Peay's student-operated
radio station.
The 600-seat concert theater has seating distributed
in three areas: a main floor, a terrace, and a mezzanine. The stage
is outfitted with vertical and horizontal pivoting panels that allow
the concert/recital platform to be transformed, with little labor
and in a short time, into a proscenium stage (with hard or soft
masking wings) for opera, dance or musical theater. Especially noteworthy
is how the auditorium can easily be adapted to the requirements
of different music programs, quickly shifting from a large platform
accommodating full symphonic orchestra or orchestra with chorus,
to a smaller platform suitable for chamber music or solo recitals.
Guest artists and ensembles can use the facility's choral, instrumental
and opera/dance rehearsal halls for practice and instruction.
