The Nationally Registered Historic Building that houses Newberry Opera dates back to 1882. A complete refurbishment in 1998 restored the historic auditorium and provided completely new theatrical production systems. The restored Newberry Opera House contains performance and exhibit spaces as well as new dressing rooms, complete support spaces, and rehearsal rooms.
Newberry Opera House can accommodate up to 426 patrons; seating is located on the main floor and a single balcony. The performance hall is used for wide-ranging community and touring productions ranging from chamber music, opera, and musical theater, to dance, film, lectures, and popular music, including jazz, bluegrass, and folk. The versatile space is also used for catered benefits and events.
The Opera House project design included acoustic isolation and shaping of the performance space, and a space conditioning system that is virtually silent.
Artec provided Design and Planning services covering Auditorium Acoustics Design and Noise & Vibration Control consulting for this renovation. The Architects for the renovation project was Craig, Gaulden & Davis, Inc.
