The New Washington Opera House was designed to serve as a new home for Washington National Opera, taking the place of an existing department store, which occupied an entire city block. The design project took place during the span of 1996-98.
The New Washington Opera was designed to seat 2000 audience members on a main floor and four tiers, and to support a regular schedule of opera, musical theatre, ballet, modern dance, and recital performances, as well as conferences and presentations.
Artec provided Design and Planning services covering Auditorium Design, Facility Planning, Specialized Performance Equipment Systems Design and Background Noise and Vibration Control consulting for this project. Unfortunately the project itself was never constructed due to insufficient funding. The architect was Charles T. Young and James Freed of I. M. Pei Cobb Freed.
